city hall was vandalized. police arrested nearly 400 people. and police now say the people of oakland, no matter where they live, are not as safe during those protests. nbc bay area s kimberly tere is in oakland to explain for us. kimberly? reporter: diane, oakland mayor jean kwan says sense october occupy protesters have cost the city about $5 million. of that 2 million in vandalism alone. in downtown oakland last night, an occupy demonstration turned into a clash with police as officers were arresting dozens of people who they say broke into the ymca. city officials say other protesters broke into city hall, causing major damage to children s art and other displays. two flags were also stolen, one of them reportedly burned by protesters. what just fight taking over a ymca? what justifies vandalizing a historic, beloved building that s a symbol of oakland s resilience and history? nothing, i think. nothing does. police estimate the crowd to be 500 strong and say they m
