BREMERTON Skyler Record was eight days into a COVID-19 quarantine aboard the USS Nimitz when his wife, Miranda, gave birth to their second child at Naval Hospital Bremerton. Despite being just 5 miles away from this wife while aboard the ship, the machinist s mate would have to wait almost an entire year to meet little Raelyn Rose, who d already learned to walk by the time her father came home Sunday.  His eyes are blue, his boots are black, after 340 days, we got our sailor back, the family s sign read as the Nimitz arrived at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard.  The 46-year-old Bremerton-based carrier s sailors are returning to a world different than they d left it. A pandemic spurred the shutdown of restaurants, movie theaters and schools. Protests for racial justice reverberated across the nation. And in all that time, the USS Nimitz s sailors traversed the Pacific and Indian oceans to defend the nation.

USS Nimitz returns to US: Aircraft carrier traveled 99,000 miles

Kitsap Sun BREMERTON, Wash. – At long last, the USS Nimitz returned home Sunday, close to a year after the aircraft carrier left Sinclair Inlet in Washington state. The 100,000-ton warship, in completing a deployment that included flying sorties against the Islamic State in the Middle East to navigating the disputed waters of the South China Sea, returns to Bremerton, Washington, having logged 99,000 miles. Navy leaders have called it a record-long journey for a carrier in the years after World War II.  Most of its 3,000-plus sailors, roughly half of which were serving in their first-ever deployment, boarded the warship April 1, 2020 to quarantine for COVID-19. With its crew manning the rails, Nimitz squeezed through Rich Passage to Sinclair Inlet Sunday, just 25 days shy of a full year away from families.
