correspondent richard engel is in syria. he joins us live. richard, what can you tell us about this attack? reporter: so, we re learning more about what u.s. forces were doing when this explosion took place. multiple local residents and among them witnesses say that u.s. forces had been on a patrol in the area, and that they would routinely stop at this restaurant, either going in to eat or to pickup food that s correct they would go to this same restaurant, one of only two, a kurdish commander said, that u.s. forces in the area would go to, and that they were there today at 1:00 right around lunch time. that some u.s. forces were inside the restaurant, others were outside talking to locals, presumably guarding the door, when a man in civilian clothing walked in, got right into the doorway itself, and exploded a
suicide vest, killing some people inside the restaurant, killing some people on the street as well. so the danger is that american forces may have set a pattern here by going to only two restaurants to pickup food in the entire city. by going to this one repeatedly t may have been an opportunity for isis to send a suicide bomber laying in wait for them to be there on their foot patrol, picking up some food. and we don t know the exact number of american service members who were killed. the u.s. military has put out a statement only saying that service members, plural, have been killed. kurdish forces say in total, not making a distinction about coalition forces or civilians, that more than 20 people were killed and injured. richard, help us out because we just played a clip of the vice-president saying earlier that isis is defeated. he said the caliphate is collapsed. that part we understand.
