The funerary monument took five years to restore and make safe before it could be reopened to the public, including removing rubbish and clearing surrounding trees. Towering above Rome s historic centre, the ancient tomb was once used as a military look-out point and hosted the lavish parties of the Roman dynasty.

Rome s Ara Pacis museum and its monumental ancient altar have been illuminated with a new lighting system thanks to a financial contribution from Bulgari. The luxury fashion house donated €120,000 to the re-lighting of the museum, in addition to the almost €87,000 of city funds, in its latest act of patronage towards Rome. The project involved replacing the existing lighting system with new LED lights, both in the museum s exhibition spaces and around the altar, which was consecrated in 9 BC. The re-lighting project at the museum, designed by US architect Richard Meier, comes amid a hive of activity in Piazza Augusto Imperatore.

Rome is to move the city bus terminal from Piazza Augusto Imperatore ahead of the much-anticipated reopening of the Mausoleum of Augustus on 1 March. The piazza will cease to act as a bus terminal on 15 February and will affect the 301, 913 and 990 bus routes, reports Italian newspaper La Repubblica. The new last stop for the 301 will be Metro A Lepanto, the 913 will end at Piazza Cavour, and the 990 will end at Lungotevere Marzio. The decision is part of a general restyling of the piazza which in addition to the monumental tomb of Rome s first emperor is home to the Ara Pacis museum.
