City of Buffalo unveils new murals on Jefferson Avenue

BUFFALO, N.Y. Buffalo s public art collection continues to grow.
The Queen City unveiled several new pieces Tuesday morning at the Jefferson Avenue apartments, located at the corner of Jefferson Avenue and Southampton Street. Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown says the newest pieces of public art represent the history and future of the Jefferson Avenue community.
Brown joined People Inc. President Rhonda Frederick to unveil the artwork and recognize the artists who contributed to the project.

Weise’s lecture focused on women’s roles and authority in pre-colonial West Africa and the changes that colonialism brought about.
Her research has a focus on politics and religion within Central Nigeria, focusing in on the ethnic groups located in the Niger-Benue confluence.
The lecture highlighted the Nupe, Yoruba and Eriba ethnic groups.
“Her works have appeared in peer-reviewed journals; in edited collections dedicated to African history, African art history, linguistics and ethnohistory,” said Phyllis Thompson, director of the ETSU Women’s Studies Program. “Her ethnohistorical films of religious masquerades in Nigeria have been shown internationally as well as in the United States.”
The Womenâs Studies Program at East Tennessee State University will host a two-day institute in January about infusing trauma-informed care principles into strategies for teaching and learning.
Phyllis Thompson, director of the Womenâs Studies Program and associate professor in the Department of Literature and Language, is co-organizing the institute with members of the Womenâs Studies Steering Committee. The project, âTrauma-Informed Strategies for Teaching and Learning: Creating a Culture of Belonging, Fostering Retention, and Increasing Degree Completion,â was one of seven projects funded by ETSUâs Instructional Development Committee.
The online institute will kick off on the evening of Sunday, Jan. 10, from 4-5:30 p.m. and will be followed by a full day of sessions on Monday, Jan. 11, from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. The events are free to attend. Registration can be found at www.etsu.edu/conf/trauma-informed-approaches-teaching-learning/.
