Marty Lawing, most recently county manager in Guilford County, North Carolina, was selected Friday as the next city manager of Fort Myers.
Lawing was a first-ballot selection by the city council in a special meeting. In the voting process council members were asked to rank the three remaining candidates in order. After Lawing was ranked first on four ballots, his appointment was confirmed on a 5-2 vote.
Three Floridians have made the cut, including Jane Shang, the city manager in Deltona, a city of 100,000 people. Broward County public works director Thomas Hurtka and Caryn Gardner-Young, a Florida Department of Transportation planning supervisor, are also still under consideration.
Some local employees with experience in government sought the job. Among the applicants were Fort Myers legal department administrator Phyllis Calloway and Public Works Director Richard Moulton.
Applicants Marie Francois, a deputy clerk in Lee County Tax Collector s office, and George Yilmaz, head of Collier County utilities, have also worked in local governments.
In whittling the field, Higginbotham showed a preference for candidates with formal certification as a public manager.
