PHETCHABURI: Veterinarians on Wednesday began a mass sterilisation of the huge monkey population at Phra Nakhon Khiri Historical Park, better known locally as Khao Wang.
The team from the National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation Department hopes to control the number of the long-tailed macaques there.
The animals abound in such numbers they annoy local residents, stealing food and damaging houses, and often scare tourists visiting the archaelogical site.
They have also caused road accidents, with death and injury to humans and animals.

The pandemic derailed community-based tourism (CBT) revenue last year by 46.5%, according to the Designated Areas for Sustainable Tourism Administration (Dasta).
Gp Capt Athikun Kongmee, the Dasta s newly-appointed director-general, said tourism revenue in 20 communities under the supervision of Dasta declined to 814,755 baht per household from 1.52 million in 2019.
Even though locals received lower tourism income, the Gini coefficient, which is the indicator for income distribution, stood at 0.369, markedly lower than the country s overall level of 0.48.
Values closer to zero signify greater income equality under the Gini index.
