YANGON, July 29 Junta authorities in Myanmar are seeking help from the international community to tackle the coronavirus, state media said Wednesday, as the impoverished country looks beyond ally China in its struggle to beat back a new wave.
The nation has been in turmoil since the military took power in February, with many hospitals ill-equipped to cope with a surging caseload after many medical staff walked out in protest at the coup.

YANGON - For a week, 21-year-old student Phoe Thar has been out by dawn to gather oxygen cylinders from the homes of coronavirus sufferers in Myanmar s second city of Mandalay.
He and fellow volunteers line the tanks up outside charities for filling and returning, trying to save lives in a country whose health system has largely collapsed since a Feb 1 coup and which now faces its worst surge of Covid-19 infections.
Funded by donors on social media, Phoe Thar and his team are part of a growing grassroots effort to combat Covid-19 that bypasses the authorities and echoes the way Myanmar s people responded to crises during previous decades of army rule.

(Photo : Pexels / Julia Volk) The military junta in Myanmar staged a coup in February which has left the majority of the country in tatters as officials are accused of hoarding oxygen supply.
Myanmar s crisis continues to grow as the military junta has forced medical workers to care for COVID-19 patients and injured residents, hunted by authorities who staged a coup early in the year.
Many residents have also been queueing up to purchase oxygen as the country s supply dwindles while the military is accused of hoarding the oxygen supplies to prioritize its officials. One resident, 21-year-old student Phoe Thar, has been spending the last week trying to get oxygen cylinders from other homes and filling them up.
