Philly AIDS Thrift at Giovanni's Room, the longest-running LGBTQ bookstore in America, is celebrating its 50th anniversary in Philadelphia's Gayborhood on Saturday, June 10 with a block party on the 1000 block of Pine St. from 12-5 p.m. The shop, which opened on South Street in 1973 and later moved to its current location, was purchased by Philly AIDS Thrift after being closed for a short time in 2014.
Philly AIDS Thrift is expanding to include a larger donation center and more retail space at its location at 5th and Bainbridge streets in Queen Village. The renovations are set to finish by mid to late summer. Since reopening from amid the COVID-19 pandemic, the store has received a surge in donations.
