At Kosovo Monastery, Nationalist Clamor Disturbs the Peace

On the Front Lines of Diplomacy, but at the Back of the Vaccine Queue

On the Front Lines of Diplomacy, but at the Back of the Line for a Vaccine State Department officials overseas expressed anger and disappointment that diplomats in Washington were being vaccinated before those in more perilous posts. “Until the department is able to provide vaccines to posts like Pristina, the impact of the pandemic to health, welfare and productivity will remain profound,” Philip S. Kosnett, the American ambassador in Pristina, Kosovo, wrote last week.Credit.Emre Tazegul/Associated Press Feb. 24, 2021 WASHINGTON In the best of times, working at the United States Embassy in Pristina, Kosovo, was always difficult: Pollution, poor electricity, unreliable internet service and a substandard health system there rendered it a hardship post for American diplomats.

Relaunching the Kosovo-Serbia Dialogue

What’s new? Efforts to resolve the long-running dispute between Kosovo and Serbia over the former’s independence have foundered. EU-led talks brokered agreement on technical issues but have struggled to address core political questions. Washington’s mid-2020 mediation effort fell apart when Kosovo’s president had to step away because of war crimes charges. Why does it matter? The dispute freezes Kosovo out of the UN and many other international bodies, ensures that both countries are barred from EU membership, leaves minority communities at risk and constitutes an impediment to regional security. Resolving the dispute would be a boon for stability in the Western Balkans and Europe.
