Despite its noble intentions, a community pantry relief initiative in the Philippines is not exempt from the harsh realities of domestic politics. Yet it continues to be a national symbol of compassion and solidarity, bringing out the best of Filipinos during the pandemic.
“Let a thousand community pantries
bloom,” declared Philippine presidential spokesman Harry
Roque. The Philippines’ community pantries
are a philanthropic initiative that has spread across the country since
mid-April in an effort to feed the poor and hungry as COVID-19 cases continue
to surge. Roque’s statement came after government officials accused the pantries

It has been a year-long dread to read news of people reduced to cold statistics of falling ill, succumbing to the virus, suffering from loss of jobs, getting arrested over slightest infractions or worse facing abuse and deaths.
This week has been different. We wake up to the good feeling that out there in our community, our city, our barangay or our school, there is a reawakened spirit of helping each other. People donating food, people waiting patiently in line to get their share, and some giving back. Poor, middle class or rich people reconnecting with this sense of community.
