At least 31 people were killed Wednesday night after an inter-island ferry caught fire in the southern Philippines. Authorities said that as many as 250 passengers jumped overboard into dark waters, trying to escape the blaze.
Many of those rescued had jumped off the ferry in panic at the height of the fire and were plucked from the sea by the coast guard, navy, another ferry and local fishermen, said Gov. Jim Hataman of the southern island province of Basilan
The Lady Mary Joy 3, carrying about 250 passengers, was travelling from the southern port city of Zamboanga City to Jolo in Sulu province when the fire broke out.
