well, you know, kelly alluded to this. and you know, when i was there, i worked with hundreds if not thousands of foreign service officers and ambassadors, career ambassadors. these are folks that joined the state department years ago, sometimes decades ago. some of them joined when nixon was president or when reagan was president or carter. they didn t sign up thinking that for the rest of their life there was going to be a democrat or a republican. so they know that their role is to execute the foreign policy of the united states as determined by the president of the united states. what they did not sign up for was rudy giuliani insinuating himself to basically break the law. and you re really seeing the character of the career foreign service when they won t brook it, when they ll no longer take it and they will go to congress and say this is what i saw, this is what the problem-s and here i am to help. and they would be doing that no matter who was sitting in the oval office. p
substance of the matter says basically i don t care. his response was unless bill taylor was deposed publicly, unless he was in some sort of public setting, a public hearing, that what he said, what he told house investigators behind closed doors does not matter. so that is sort of the convoluted and conflicted response that we re getting from republicans who, by the way, still have not defended president trump by and large on the merits. they have not defended his interactions with his ukrainian counterpart. philippe, you used to work at the state department. take politics out of it. i mean partisanship politics out of it. i agree with democrats more than republicans or vice versa. and just tell me what it says to you to have a diplomat go and testify in front of lawmakers to say that the state department was being cut out and there was a shadow campaign, an irregular correspondence led by rudy giuliani in order to influence politics in ukraine for domestic political benefit.

and philippe reinus, co-host of unredacted. and joining us from d.c., washington post colleague eugene scott. moments ago on fox news, white house acting chief of staff oh. i actually am a little ahead. sorry about that. it s my face. it s not you, it s me. you are there in the d.c. bureau. bring us up to speed if you can on the impact of mick mulvaney and that press conference and his standing in washington overall at the white house in general. that press conference was a defining moment for mulvaney in terms of his leading the president s staff. we have reporting that supports that while president trump encouraged him to go out there and do the briefing, a briefing that has not happened in perhaps
