The Caron Commission in the 1950s was not the first to probe the inner workings of the Montreal Police and it certainly wasn’t the last.
Presided by Quebec Superior Justice François Caron, the public inquiry revealed that police were turning a blind eye to prostitution and gambling during Montreal’s heyday as a Sin City North. It led to the charging, fining and firing of dozens of officers for dereliction of duty. But the fallout also shook the political landscape, helping to usher in Mayor Jean Drapeau’s administration at Montreal City Hall.
