Solvay has announced plans to phase out completely the use of thermal coal at its soda ash plant at Rheinberg, Germany. After commissioning a first biomass boiler, which will go into operation at the end of this month, Solvay says it will build a second biomass boiler that will complete the thermal coal phaseout by 2025 and make Rheinberg the first soda ash plant in the world to be powered primarily by renewable energy, the company says.
The two biomass boilers will use scrap waste wood chips a mixture of used wood, from industrial residues and demolition as fuel to produce steam and electricity. The waste wood will be gathered by a partner company within a 150–200 kilometer radius of the Rheinberg facility and transformed at the site into pellets and fed into the boilers.
