Argentinian chef to turn on the flames at former Magnet locale with Barda
When chef Javier Bardauil first walked into the hip, new restaurant Magnet in Detroit s Core City neighborhood just after its opening, he said he fell in love.
Now nearly a year and a half later, the Buenos Aires-born chef is preparing to introduce himself to Detroit with his own restaurant, Barda, in the very same space. It has a lot of personality, he says of the azure-tiled room framed by booths with a sunken bar in the middle and an open kitchen in the back of the room. It s going to be tough for me to be something else here than Magnet, but I have my own repertoire, my own view about hosting people here.
The Detroit restaurant group behind Takoi and Magnetdissolved last summer. Chef Brad Greenhill and developer Philip Kafka ended their partnership under the umbrella group Top Young Hospitality due in part to the economic strains of the pandemic. Takoi remains open with Greenhill as its sole owner.
Expect the menu at Barda (Bardauil’s nickname) to feature Argentinian wood-fired vegetable, meat, and seafood dishes paired with wines from the region and amaro, like Fernet. Assisting Bardauil in the kitchen and with navigating Detroit’s culinary scene will be chef de cuisine Michael Goldberg (Allenby Detroit).
“We’re going to celebrate the Argentinian style of cooking,” Bardauil told Detroit News. “The gathering around fire with a very honest and simple approach, and it’s going to be seasonal. Nothing fancy. I’m really expecting that people have fun here, as I have in the kitchen. I like to laugh. I like to enjoy what I’m doing all the time. That’s my goal.”
