Pledge to help most vulnerable in Dundee recover from pandemic Updated: May 21, 2021, 3:33 pm © Mhairi Edwards Young people, the elderly and the unemployed are among those disproportionately affected by the pandemic in Dundee, a new report shows. Support services in the city must now be geared towards helping them, along with other vulnerable groups, including those suffering from mental health issues. The findings and recommendations for improvement come in the latest report by Dundee’s Fairness Commission. The report identifies 29 key areas where work must be undertaken to improve services to promote fairness in the city. It includes actions relating to food and fuel poverty, disability, mental health and wellbeing.

Under the plans, senior management will remain part of the national Universities Superannuation Scheme (USS). But lower paid workers on grades 1-6 will only be able to join a new, much cheaper, locally-defined contribution scheme from August 1. The current Dundee University Superannuation Scheme (which is only open to pay grades 1-6) is a defined benefit CARE scheme. The proposed replacement scheme would be a privately administered scheme with no guaranteed benefits in retirement and subject to the performance of the investments selected by its provider. Low-paid workers should ‘not be made to suffer’ Dundee University UNISON branch secretary Phil Welsh said pension poverty is “very real” and questioned the reasoning behind the changes.
