from the phil ruker and carol eddie book. reporter: speaker pelosi said she reached out to milley. her concerns about the stability of former president trump and his decision making. now we know it went beyond pelosi, talking behind the scenes directly with general milley about the concerns. an interesting development. okay. thank you all. that s from the i alone can fix it. that does it for this edition of andrea mitchell reports. today is 25 years since msnbc went live. so much changed, including hair colors, styles. congratulations to all my colleagues that have been here the whole time, me included, among the first ones on air that day, brian williams. read his thoughts on the launch
it just doesn t work that way. it s mostly q and a. i want to start a campaign to to keep philippe reines out of the kitchen and away from the chicken skewers. philippe, thank you very much. i was going to say i agree with josh that you were great. but that was a gratuitous attack. that was phil ruker and i m getting screamed that we have to go because we got to take a commercial break before ali velshi comes back. we ll be right back. e ali velshi comes back. we ll be right back. erence in p. and mike s won them, which is important right this minute, because if he could beat america s biggest gun lobby, helping pass background check laws and defeat nra backed politicians across this country, beat big coal, helping shut down hundreds of polluting plants and beat big tobacco, helping pass laws to save the next generation from addiction. all against big odds you can beat him. i m mike bloomberg and i approve this message. i m mike bloomberg and i approve this message. as a doctor
you come in and you punish the son. it just doesn t make any sense to be punishing mexico for something that they didn t create and that mexico and the united states is both trying to solve. phil, the president has thrown some thinly veiled threats to fellow republicans in the senate for publicly opposing him and these tariffs. is their pressure campaign doing anything to impact him? well, steph, the president has said it would be foolish for republican leaders to oppose these tariffs, and yet there s a huge rebellion among republicans, especially in the senate that we ve seen emerge this week to these tariffs being led by the two republican senators from iowa, by senator ted cruz of texas and the texas delegation. there s real genuine opposition to these tariffs and fear that it would effectively be a tax on companies that would be felt by consumers, not only for agricultural goods but automobiles and so on down the
deals with the u.s. asap. let s break this thing down. phil ruker is the white house bureau chief for the washington post. ambassador james jones was u.s. ambassador to mexico under president clinton. matt gourman for the nrcc. ambassador, you ve been outspoken about wanting to separate trade and immigration, but mexico and guatemala are not working with the united states to deal with the flow of migrants, until now. the fact that the president has pushed tariffs, that actually got them to the table. so is there an argument to be made, hey, at least they re talking? well, i don t think the tariffs are what got guatemala and honduras to the table. they re still not at the table, for all practical purposes. there are two separate issues here. one is trade. and the u.s./mexico trade relationship is perhaps the strongest in the world. mexico is our strongest, our biggest market for export of goods and services from the
there today, and it s more breakout sessions, does that mean it will be tougher to get a deal done? i think so because the administration people, u.s. administration people don t know what the president really wants. and i think they re afraid to make a commitment that will be undone by the president when he gets back to the united states. phil, what do you think? i think that s exactly right. i think they can certainly work through some of these issues and try to hash out something, but there is no way to really consummate a deal here until the president weighs in. and his representative, vice president pence is not even going to be there today. i do not imagine there will be much demonstrable progress coming out of the talks today. phil, ambassador jones. matt, stick around. more to cover with you. president trump spoke about democracy and world unity at his speech commemorating the 75th anniversary of d-day.
