The contract to build our new submarine fleet is finally attracting some critical attention, but mainly on the basis of cost over-run and the probable lack of local participation in their construction (“$90b French subs project could sink”, February 25).

Surely the real criticism of this flawed contract is that it will not give us any new ships until 15-25 years from now and that they will be only slightly better than what we have already, while our potential adversaries are putting superior vessels into the seas around us at a much greater rate.
