The Wagon Box Fight occurred on August 2, 1867, on an open field between Fort Phil Kearny and the present-day town of Story. It was the last major battle between the U.S. Army and Lakota warriors along the Bozeman Trail. Twenty-six soldiers and six civilians were attacked by several hundred Indians
Now that things have dried up, one Sheridan County campground was able to reopen earlier this month.
The campground within the Connor Battlefield State Park, on the south side of Ranchester closed in early-middle June, because flood waters from the Tongue River spilled over into the park.

0n July 3, 1908, 114 Years ago, Colonel Henry Carrington and others who were survivors of the Indian Wars at Fort Phil Kearny, came back to Sheridan. They dedicated the Fetterman Fight monument on July 3, 1908, 42 years after the battle occurred on December 21, 1866.
