In 1995, OMC’s Pauly Fuemana and Alan Jansson pulled an all-nighter and wrote ‘How Bizarre’, a song that would come to dominate the global charts and make history as Aotearoa’s first hip hop beat to go truly global. - Pauly Fuemana’s wife, Kirstine Fuemana, still has “books and books” of his songwriting and remembers him writing “endlessly” when he came up with the track that would go on to irrevocably change his life in 1993.

How Bizarre just didn t sound like anything else. So when it came out a lot of people went ‘what the f. is this’ because it just sounded so odd,” recalls New Zealand music stalwart Simon Grigg, who funded and released the song, co-writen by Fuemana and producer Alan Jansson, on his independent label Huh! Records in 1995. “But when you hear it two or three times on the radio, all of a sudden it just sounds fresh. And, now, you listen to top 40 radio and pretty much everything sounds the same - they re all versions of the same thing. “And then you get a song which sounds completely different and bang! People love it.”

Singer-songwriter Carly Binding turned down the opportunity to rejoin the show and the band that made her famous 22 years ago.
Producers of the rebooted Popstars approached her to join the new show with her former band TrueBliss that came together on the show in 1999. It would have been cool to be part of the show on my own, to kind of show that side of the Popstars story but the producers have their own vision so it s their call, Binding tells Spy.
