Soldiers from the Pha Muang task force spotted two men, each carrying a sack, while patrolling the Nong Khieo border area in tambon Muang Na late on Thursday night. When signalled them to stop for a search, the men fled into the night, leaving the sacks behind.

(Photo: Phanumet Tanraksa) CHIANG MAI: Seven elephants suffered serious burns to their mouths and tongues from eating grass contaminated with the herbicide paraquat at a border village in Omkoi district. Five of them were reported to be in critical condition. The paraquat poisoning occured at Khorphator village late on Thursday night. The  domesticated elephants had been set free to forage for food, and ate the grass at nearby farms which had been sprayed with the banned chemical.

(Photo by Phanumet Tanraksa) CHIANG MAI: Thirty-four gamblers, including four Cambodians, were arrested in a police raid on a luxury resort in San Sai district late on Saturday night. The raid, which took place at about 9pm, was led by Pol Maj Gen Pichet Jiranantasin, the provincial police chief. Pol Maj Gen Pichet said the raid followed reports that a group of people had rented a resort at Moo 7 village in tambon Nong Han, San Sai district, for gambling purposes.
