Kind Mechanic Steps Up to Fix Paraplegic Woman’s Wheelchair Lift–and Act of Kindness Spreads
In a world where examples of “humanity” are few and far between, a kind act from a neighbor can go a long way. A Rhode Island mechanic changed the life of a disabled woman, making her daily routine more manageable, by offering a helping hand.
Christian Barber, a resident of North Smithfield, went the extra mile for one of his customers, Linda Abrants.
According to Abrants, she suffered an accident about 20 years ago when she was in California, about 3,000 miles away from where she lives now.

A mechanic in Rhode Island has a loyal customer in a wheelchair-bound woman after going the extra mile to help her maintain her independence.
Linda Abrants met
Christian Barber while wheeling around the block near Phantom Motor Works, where he works. She needed air in her tires and he helped her out, so when her wheelchair lift in her truck needed repairing, she turned to the mechanic she could trust.
It’s not the kind of work he typically does, but he spent six weeks working on the lift. It was poorly constructed and has broken before, but he made it his mission to fix it. And it wasn’t easy, he couldn’t find parts he needed, but he managed to make it work properly.
