Daddy Days: The difficulty of Mother’s Day gifts
Caleb Harris
It’s hard to write a Mother’s Day themed column. Like so many Mother’s Day gifts, the story angles seem trite and overdone. When I asked the boys what they wanted to do for Mother’s Day, their answers were a standard menagerie of Mother’s Day things: make breakfast, get flowers, buy her a coffee cup.
I say almost because the 2-year-old responded to, “what should we do for Mother’s Day?” with, “My birthday!” Can’t tell if he’s very self-centered or cleverly picking up on the fact that without him (and his brothers) there would be no Mother’s Day for Mom. I’ll have to keep an eye on this one …
Pflugerville library: Virtual summer reading program offered
Carmen Lazo
The Pflugerville Public Library will offer an online summer reading program this year! It is our hope that life can get back to normal soon but in the meantime, virtual events will be hosted through the summer to provide opportunities for our guests of all ages to enjoy new reading materials, video tutorials for crafts, special guests and more.
Our popular Summer Reading Competition will return this year in an online format. Kids, teens and families are invited to participate as individuals or as a group. After participants are randomly sorted onto four teams, they can submit the number of hours they spend reading to earn points. The library will share updated team scores once a week on social media. Participants have an important choice to make. Will they submit hours each week, or save them up until the end of the summer to give their team a surprise boost? The winning team will be a
American-Statesman journalists vote to unionize
Kirk Ladendorf
Employees voted 36-12 to affiliate with the NewsGuild, a news media workers union based in Washington D.C.
Wednesday’s vote came after several months of discussions among newsroom employees, a group of whom proposed their partnership with the national union in December.
Katie Hall, an employee who worked on the unionization effort, said the new local union in Austin will formally elect leaders and survey all employees to gather their workplace concerns.
Hall said the organizers hope to begin collective bargaining with management within two months. Hall, a courts reporter for the newspaper, said serious discussions about unionizing began early last year.
