Dimapur, Sep. 21 (EMN): A Malayan night heron (Gorsachius melanolophus) was handed over to the Kohima Forest Division by one Vesato Theluo on Tuesday. An update from the department informed that the bird was rescued from the premises of RDNÜMS at Old Ministers’ Hill in Kohima on the evening of September 19 and released on Tuesday in the presence of range forest officer, Kohima Range, Pezaneinuo Chielie, and other staff. The range forest officer also mentioned that it was the third case in a span of three years. The first reported case was on November 18, 2020, and second on October 6, 2021. “Globally, this species is found in southern and eastern Asia including India. Though the population trend is not yet known, however it lies between 2000 and 20,000 and its classification status by IUCN is under least concern (LC),” it stated.
Dimapur, Sep. 16 (EMN): Kohima forest division under the department of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, in collaboration with the Government Middle School at Forest Colony in Kohima, observed the World Ozone Day on September 16 on the theme ‘Montreal Protocol @ 35: Global cooperation protecting life on earth.’ An update informed that a total of 250 participants including students, teachers and staff of the Kohima range took part in the event. Range forest officer of Kohima Range, Pezaneinuo Chielie, in her keynote address, encouraged the participants to actively and consciously be responsible in protecting the environment and contribute towards the common goal. Resource person and forester-I, Avezo Ruho, highlighted the causes, effects and solutions for protecting the ozone layer. The head teacher of GMS, Albert Tungoe, also spoke on the occasion. Dimapur, June 4 (EMN): Kohima Forest Division launched a magazine ‘Into the Wild (Vol. I),’ which was officially released by Dharmendra Prakash, PCCF and HoFF, on June 3 at his office chamber in Kohima. Talking about the magazine, Rajkumar M, DFO Kohima, who conceptualised the magazine, stated that the Kohima Forest Division collected articles from the community on conservation from different villages. The magazine contained interviews, posters, and articles contributed by the community, an update from the department stated. The DFO stated that the division has been organising online competitions during the past few years amid the pandemic and collecting articles, which has been included in the magazine. Meanwhile, Dharmendra Prakash has congratulated the division for the initiative and encouraged them to continue the good work.
