Divided, united, liberal, insular, in the same breath

Divided, united, liberal, insular, in the same breath July 5, 2021, 8:43 PM IST By Narayani Ganesh An individual, community or society could be many things, all at the same time. And all these identities and attitudes may not necessarily be logical. So, any one entity may hold conflicting views on any issue. Which view, belief or aspect dominates at any given time depends a great deal on the context and one’s sense of security. Which is why the recent Pew Centre poll findings on religion in India hold no surprises. The study finds that Indians say it is important to respect all religions, yet major religious groups prefer to live separately as they feel that there is nothing much in common between groups. While there is a veneer of understanding of the need to give space to all faiths and respect them, when push comes to shove, people would rather stay away from unlike groups.
