Three sailors aboard the aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt have tested positive for the coronavirus, Navy officials said Monday, marking the second outbreak on the ship in a year.

The outbreak on the ship led to the death of a sailor, the firing of the Roosevelt’s commanding officer and, indirectly, to the resignation of the Navy’s acting secretary.
About two months after the Theodore Roosevelt left San Diego in January 2020, the ship visited Da Nang, Vietnam. Two weeks after that visit, sailors on board began testing positive for COVID-19. The ship diverted to Guam, where the majority of the crew sequestered at local hotels as the virus spread.
Chief Petty Officer Charles Thacker, 41,
died of the virus in April. More than 1,200 sailors about 25 percent of the crew tested positive over the next few weeks.
SAN DIEGO
After leaving its home port of San Diego more than two weeks ago, the Navy announced the aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt has officially begun its second deployment in less than a year.
The ship and its more than 5,500 sailors have been operating off the coast of California since leaving its berth at Naval Air Station North Island Dec. 7. It began sailing west on Wednesday, the Navy said in a statement.
“We are at the highest state of readiness to support America’s interests around the world at a moment’s notice,” said Capt. Eric Anduze, the ship’s commanding officer.
