India’s Energy Mix: The conference featured major south and southeast Asian national energy regulatory authorities from Bangladesh, Indonesia, Malaysia, Sri Lanka and Thailand, as well as international industry leaders.
The share of imports in Indias total natural gas requirement has come down from 58% in 2019 to around 44% at present. With this, the crude oil and liquefied natural gas import bill has also fallen 22.5%. If things go according to plan, the share of natural gas in Indias energy basket will more than double to 15% by 2030.
The committee comprises six members and is headed by former HPCL chairman M B Lal. It will submit a report in three months. Earlier this month after a cyclone hit the southern coast, an oil leakage from Chennai Petroleum Corporation Ltd (CPCL) facility at Ennore damaged hundreds of boats and affected the livelihood of several fishermen.
In a statement, the regulator said the committee would examine the existing rules and suggest ways to strengthen technical and safety systems in the industry.
