Penarth Covid cases falling after rise earlier in the month

CORONAVIRUS cases in Penarth have gone down significantly in recent days, according to data from Public Health Wales. In the seven days up to February 12, Penarth recorded 16 cases. It came down from 36 the previous week, which made Penarth the second-most prevalent Covid area in Wales for that week. With 16 new cases in the week up to February 12, Penarth recorded the second-highest number in the Vale for that period, behind Barry Island with 19. Overall cases are coming down week-by-week since the turn of the year. In the week to February 12 the Vale recorded 109 cases at a rolling rate of 81.6 (the average in Wales currently is 85.6) - compared to 136 the previous week and 150 the week before that.

Penarth sees highest rise in cases in the Cardiff and Vale

PENARTH saw the highest rise in cases in the Cardiff and Vale University Health Board region and the second highest figure in Wales in recent days. In the seven days up to February 5 Penarth recorded 36 new cases – up from 12 on the previous week and by far the highest number in Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan. If not for 42 cases in Holywell and Bagillt in the north of the country, Penarth would have recorded the highest number of Covid cases in Wales for that week. It came as Vale police officers pleaded with people not to travel to the seafront for the third week in succession.

In the week up to December 7 Upper Penarth had 33 new cases, and Dinas Powys had 22. It means in the 21 days up to December 13, Upper Penarth recorded the second highest number of cases in the Vale, with 105.

Covid pressures on Llandough Hospital have intensified

The hospital in Llandough is now receiving up to ten new coronavirus patients per day. The news comes days after the health board said they were “extremely concerned” over the sharply increasing cases in the region. The leaders of Cardiff council and the Vale of Glamorgan council, as well as bosses from South Wales Police and Cardiff and Vale University Health Board described a bleak emergency situation as hospital staff are “pushed to the limit”. A spokeswoman for Cardiff and Vale University Health Board said: “Over the last week the pressures on the hospital have intensified. As the rate of infection increases in Wales, we are closely monitoring the number of hospital admissions and will open up additional capacity across our sites including University Hospital Llandough as, and when, required. Llandough currently has a total of 58 Covid inpatients, 24 of whom are recovering, and is receiving 4-10 new Covid admissions per day.
