The Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (Icasa) has opened up the lower 6 GHz, which is the radio frequency range of 5925 MHz to 6425 MHz spectrum band, for the provision of WiFi services. This followed an Amendment to Annexure B of Radio Frequency Spectrum Regulations, 2015, in respect of Radio Frequency Spectrum Licence Exemptions, which consists of a list of radio apparatus, the use or possession of which does not require a radio frequency spectrum licence, which Icasa published on Tuesday.
The release of additional spectrum frequencies is expected to aid economic growth and job creation in line with the country's goal of reaping the benefits of the digital economy.
