From the Publisher: Closing a door, but opening a window

By Donna Brassard On January 1, 1999 I became the publisher of Mainebiz. I was so excited that WPL had purchased it from Jonathan Whitney, that I was going to be the new publisher, and my family was moving to Maine! And what has transpired over the last 22 years? Two recessions, five websites, two changes in company ownership, a growing number of employees that had us moving to five different locations, the start and end of the Momentum Convention, the transition online to digital and mobile content, and a pandemic. It certainly has not been boring. Image Donna Brassard, Mainebiz publisher I’ve read that your 20s is a time of experimentation and change. In your 30s you concentrate on developing your career. Your 40s is a time for maximizing earnings. In your 50s you’ve proven yourself and begin to lose your patience to suffer fools lightly. After that you begin to self-reflect and ask yourself, what else is there that I want to do?

Winter wallops southern Maine with snow, wind, but some businesses carry on

For some Mainers eagerly anticipating a white Christmas, the holiday has come early. Winter Storm Gail on Thursday morning plowed into southern Maine, delivering heavy snow, gusty winds and hundreds of weather closures for businesses and schools. As of mid-morning, forecasts called for at least 1 foot of snow in Cumberland and York counties, with some areas receiving as much as 18 inches. Temperatures were in the teens. The National Weather Service had issued a winter storm warning for all of York, Cumberland, Kennebec, Androscoggin, Sagadahoc, Lincoln, Knox and Waldo counties, as well as southern Oxford County. North of Bangor, however, the storm was predicted to only leave a trace of snow, as Gail swerves out to sea. Earlier in the day and on Wednesday, the storm had pummelled much of the northeastern U.S., leaving over 40 inches of snow in some places.
