There have been growing fears that the 20-year VAT relief under the Listed Places of Worship Grant Scheme would end on March 31.
But on Wednesday, Nigel Huddleston MP, Parliamentary Under-Secretary at the department of Culture, Media and Sport, revealed in Parliament that it would continue on the same terms.

Covid-19 emergency grants to 28 Norfolk churches Emergency repair grants of more than half a million pounds have been awarded to 28 historic churches in Norfolk. The 28 Norfolk churches will share £513,000 from Historic England’s Covid-19 emergency heritage at risk response fund. The funds will enable repairs, conservation and investigative surveys to be carried out as soon as possible. A 20-year tax “concession” to help meet repair costs of places of worship could be lost from next April, a leading Norfolk church conservation charity has warned.
Norfolk Churches Trust is urging the Chancellor Rishi Sunak to continue the successful VAT relief scheme (the Listed Places of Worship Grant Scheme), which was introduced in 2001.
Scrapping the listed places of worship grant scheme could add at least £2.25m to the £11m cost of repairing 47 Norfolk churches identified as most at risk.
