Franklin cared about this as much as eleanor did. [laughter] in fact, his letter is almost kind of facetious. I think he said Something Like the president was like he said maam, i dont mean to i dont you to think you have to develop, build a new dorm for this young colored lady or Something Like that but when you get a chance get a dean to write about this situation. Well, he was going through the motions because eleanor was leaning on him in pol polly behf so she didnt get to go. She went to the university of california berkeley. But she did she did act. You know, she tried to move things where she could. Okay. Theres another case ill mention of 50 soldiers, still im sorry, seamen who were courtmartials and polly field it was unfair. Covering the case of the los angeles sentinel and feeding eleanor material about it and eleanor was pressing fdr to do something. This whether another place where they interacted with one another had to do with crossing between civil rights and human righ
Kind of a genre that keeps growing in literature, both fiction and nonfiction. We had a panel like this three years ago, and it really was intended to celebrate the fact that the Supreme Court is, seems to be the subject of more and more books of all kinds. And judging by the corner of my desk where i stack books about the court that have come in from publishers, the genre has only increased since the last event. So we thought wed do this again especially since the Supreme Court is in the news more than ever these days. Im especially pleased with the panel thats been assembled this evening. Ive praised each one of them not just because of their books, but because their books, each in their own way, have shed new light on the Supreme Court which sorely needs more light. So ill introduce each of them briefly, then start the discussi
Republic, started one year later, it breaks more or less into two big parts, the first is the revolutionary part, the first we 4 years leading up to 1923 and the second big parties eight years starting in 1925, the long march to power, the electoral period. And also referred to the legal period, the first we 4 years trying to gain power illegally through revolution, the last eight years through legal means not counting street money. Between these periods, 1924, in my research before i decided to do this i noticed 1924 seemed to me to be a neglected period of the hitler story. It seemed to be an important period when hitlers political arc shifted from being an impetuous revolutionary to be a political player, he had time in prison to reflect on the error of his ways and the fact that he was probably not going to be able to persuade the military to join him in a coup and he had to figure out another way to gain power. He said to one of his friends in prison, out voting them will take lon
