Today Catholics around the country made their way to their nearest parish to mark Ash Wednesday.
Ash Wednesday is the beginning of Lent, a time for Christians to get back on track and re-focus on their life.
Archbishop Peter Loy Chong during his sermon at Sacred Heart Cathedral in Suva expressed that putting ashes on everyone’s forehead marks the symbol of repentance, sorrow, and turning back to God.

“For us, these are the symbols of reconciliation and contrition, all of us need this and that is why we are here because we all share one common human universal experience and that is brokenness.”

The Head of the Catholic Church in Fiji, Archbishop Peter Loy Chong says COVID-19 and TC Yasa has reminded us of important values we should have in life, namely of love and care for others and creation.
In his New Year’s message Archbishop Chong says people have generously reached out to those who have lost jobs due to the fall of the tourism industry and those recently affected by TC Yasa.

“Every New Year gives us the opportunity to create a vision that will bring about positive change.”
These are the words of Archbishop Peter Loy Chong in his New Year’s message.
Archbishop Loy Chong says COVID-19 and Tropical Cyclone Yasa has impacted Fiji in addition to the detrimental effects of climate change.

The Archbishop also highlighted domestic violence as a serious social problem.
Father Loy Chong adds these challenges have reminded us the importance of embracing love and care for one another.
