Microgrid 2021: Reducing Costs and Gaining Local Control of Energy

By Heidi Besen/Shutterstock.com Somewhere far off in another country, a hacker infiltrated a US energy company, crippling a fuel supply line that runs 5,500 miles from New York to Texas and leaving me, like others, unsure if I’d make it home from work on the gasoline left in my tank. It is an example of the vulnerability of sole reliance on big energy.  Electric grids are the big energy equivalent of the fuel line on the power side of the energy industry. They carry electricity instead of fuel, but are subject to the same kind of far-reaching calamities because of a single point of failure. So far, we haven’t experienced massive power outages because of a cyberattack, but we have again and again because of storms, wildfires or something as simple as a tree branch falling on a wire in the wrong place.

Homer Energy and UL launch modelling software for renewable hybrids

Homer Energy and UL launch modelling software for renewable hybrids Image: UL Advisory, audit and testing group UL has unveiled a new service for utility-scale renewable hybrid power systems to evaluate their potential profitability. Called HOMER Front & UL Analysis, the service is designed to assess whether a developer’s solar or wind plus storage systems will “meet financial requirements and provide a stable and greener power supply”, Peter Lilienthal, HOMER Energy’s founder and UL Renewables’ global microgrid lead, said. UL acquired Homer Energy in December 2019 to expand the company’s training, analytics and advisory services across the renewable energy value chain.

New UL capability advances design of utility-scale hybrid power systems that provide clean, stable electricity

Share this article Share this article BOULDER, Colo., March 16, 2021 /PRNewswire/  HOMER Energy by UL, global leader in the development of standard-setting energy modeling software, today announced its newest service – HOMER Front + UL Analysis. The new capability helps energy developers design and optimize the complexities of front-of-the-meter utility-scale renewable hybrid power systems that include wind, solar and battery energy storage systems (BESS). HOMER Front + UL Analysis meets an increasingly critical need as power providers seek to improve power supply stability and resilience, decarbonize energy resources and move toward a clean energy transition. Recent catastrophic weather and fire events resulted in massive power outages and demonstrated the value of resilience provided by hybrid power systems integrated into a diversified energy grid. These hybrid power systems bolster the power grid with flexibility, resilience, demand management and price management.

Panorama - Consumers Prefer Energy Providers That Offer Renewable Energy Sources - Renewable Energy Magazine, at the heart of clean energy journalism

Tuesday, 16 February 2021 Parks Associates will host the 12 th annual Smart Energy Summit: Engaging the Consumer in 2021 with multiple virtual sessions taking place February 23-24, April 28, August 18, and October 27. The executive conference, sponsored by Bidgely, Austin Energy, Ossiaco, and FLO, examines the evolution of the consumer utility market.  New research from Parks Associates finds 43% of US broadband households report a preference for energy providers that offer renewable energy resources like solar and wind versus providers that offer only traditional sources such as oil and gas. Pixabay Smart Energy Summit features speakers, interactive panel discussions, and research from Parks Associates on consumer adoption of new utility programs and energy management solutions, including solar, electric vehicles, and other energy-efficient products. Sessions on February 24 include
