The Downton Abbey sequel has been officially confirmed.
Production on a follow-up to the hit 2019 film, based on the period drama TV series, began last week and is slated for release at Christmas. The original cast, including stars such as Hugh Bonneville, Michelle Dockery, Imelda Staunton and Dame Maggie Smith, will all return for the flick.
In addition, Dominic West, Hugh Dancy, Laura Haddock and Nathalie Baye have boarded the project.
Focus Features are producing the film along with Gareth Neame s Carnival Films with Simon Curtis directing. Downton Abbey creator Julian Fellowes is once again writing the screenplay and will produce with Gareth and Liz Trubridge.

After much anticipation, we have some good news for Downton Abbey fans! The popular franchise will officially get another movie and will be released in just a few months! The original cast is all returning for the new film, set to be released on December 22, 2021. Production began last week and will continue for the next several weeks.
In addition to the original cast, Hugh Dancy, Laura Haddock, Nathalie Baye, and Dominic West will also be joining the cast.
Downton creator Academy-Award winner Julian Fellowes will once again write the film’s screenplay, with Emmy and BAFTA Award-winning Gareth Neame and Emmy Award-winning Liz Trubridge back to produce.
Meanwhile, BAFTA and Emmy nominated director Simon Curtis will be joining the filmmaking team to direct the sequel.
The initial film followed a Royal Visit to the Crawley family and Downton staff from the King and Queen of England and ended with a ball fitting for the Royal Family.
