Economy experts say the employee shortage could be caused by a combination of things – workers may have left the industry, some are too scared to come back and others are still collecting unemployment. Peter Herrero owns three restaurant and catering businesses, including Sam’s of Gedway Way in White Plains. He says he s never seen it this bad. We are training from scratch, looking for other industries to bring people in, through friends, through family, through bonuses, he says.

Peter Herrero, owner of Sam s of Gedney Way says pre-COVID, the restaurant had nearly 100 employees. They had to drop to 15 employees and now the restaurant has 22 employees. The hospitality and food services industry has been hit especially hard by the pandemic. CNBC says the industry lost 498,000 jobs in December. The food services sub-sector accounted for 372,000 of that net loss.
