Glass Art on Show at Beardsley Zoo, March 6

Written by Lisa Clair BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – Connecticut’s Beardsley Zoo will present “DAZZLE: A Garden of Glass” with a presentation of 500 pieces of the Riverton, Connecticut-based artist Peter Greenwood’s glass art. The award-winning Glass Master has shown his work in twenty-five museums, from The Louvre Museum in Paris, France, to Connecticut’s The Bruce Museum in Greenwich, and the New Britain Museum of American Art.  Greenwood’s visually arresting and brilliantly colored art will be displayed throughout the Greenhouse, using lush foliage and beautiful blossoms to enhance the beauty of both artwork and plants. The theme, as described by Greenwood, is “regeneration.” The pieces, many repurposed from previous installations, are intended to evoke vines, leaves, roots and petals in vibrant shades: cobalt blue, ruby, green, and yellow.  A striking display of twenty glass pitchers will be tilted from a tree overhanging the pond. HERE’S a toast to His Majesty, King Elizabeth! No. It doesn’t sound right, does it? It would be silly, if not downright insulting to the most prominent woman in Britain. Yet Darlingtonians will soon have to start addressing the borough’s most prominent woman as though she was a man. Tradition here insists that mayors are male even when they aren’t. And Councillor Cyndi Hughes is next in line to become the town’s first citizen, starting in May. The council website says: “The Mayor should be addressed, irrespective of gender, as Mr Mayor .” Why? Because that’s the way it’s always been, from the days when women weren’t even allowed to vote for councillors, let alone be one.
