(WWSB) - The Sarasota Police Department showcasing their new body-worn cameras on Wednesday. The police chief says officers have been training with Axon 3 body cameras out in the field since April 21. The department has 122 of these cameras now available and another 32 Axon Flex 2 bodycams for SWAT and Emergency Response Team Members. “As far as the officers are concerned and protection for the officers, it absolutely is necessary and it’s also protection for our community and our agency,” said Chief Jim Rieser with the Sarasota Police Department. “I see this as a home run for the city of Sarasota and also for the police officer and the Sarasota Police Department.”

Sarasota PD turns on 154 body-warn cameras Kimberly Kuizon reports SARASOTA, Fla. - Worn on their chest, body cameras have become the latest piece of equipment that will become a vital part of the Sarasota Police Department.  The camera doesn t judge. The camera just records everything it records, said Peter Ferranti.  The 154 body-worn cameras were purchased for $3.2 million. The city approved funds covering training, hardware, and storage for five years. Sarasota police said the benefits far outweigh the price tag.  A lot of times when the public puts those videos out they put out little snippets and they only put out partial videos. In our case, we are putting out the entire thing and it’s recording it unbiasedly, said Ferranti.
