I wasn’t a big reader as a child but I was obsessed with drawing. I have clear memories of being very young, lying on the backroom carpet and doodling away the hours with a pencil in my hand. I loved drawing tiny details. Uniforms, tanks and aeroplanes. I also liked comics such as The Beano, The Dandy and, later, Action, Battle and Warlord. I had no interest in becoming a soldier, but I always wanted to be an artist.
