The Walkshire campaign designed by Welcome to Yorkshire is to help people discover the county on foot. The walks are to take in countryside as well as towns and cities. James Mason, the organisation s chief executive, said: We hope to get millions of people across the county playing their part.

A walk for every day of the year is promised in new campaign

The aim of the Walkshire initiative is to promote Yorkshire as the walking capital of the world. As part of the year-long venture, people will be encouraged to contribute details of their own favourite strolls or treks. There will also be a daily, featured walk, with businesses and organisations invited to sponsor and nominate routes. Four big, seasonal walks will take place – plus special activities for Yorkshire Day on August 1 and a Tour de Walkshire in place of the postponed cycle race. Spearheading the campaign is Welcome to Yorkshire, which says there will also be opportunities to fundraise for its official charity partner – Yorkshire Cancer Research.

The year-long project will see 365 walks covering all corners of the county to showcase the very best of the region across the globe. Walkshire will demonstrate Yorkshire’s rich diversity of landscapes, architecture, heritage and attractions and of course food and drink all through the medium of walking.

The aim it says is to promote Yorkshire as the ‘walking capital of the world’ with the year-long project seeing 365 walks covering all corners of the county - including Craven - to showcase the very best of the region across the globe. ‘Walkshire’ it is hoped will demonstrate Yorkshire’s rich diversity of place, landscapes, people, architecture, heritage, history, economies, attractions and food and drink all through the medium of walking with a strong emphasis on inclusion and accessibility with walks planned for all abilities.
