Fifteen years ago, in 2008, I was involved in promoting a new initiative called Spayweek, which had been set up by vets and animal rescue groups to encourage pet owners to have their dogs and cats spayed and neutered. Spaying and neutering is the best way to ensure good health in many pets, preventing a number of common disease issues. But Spayweek had been set up with a different aim in mind: to reduce the number of unwanted puppies and kittens being born in this country.
