THE devastation wrought by the foot-and-mouth outbreak in Northern England was met by farmers determined to get back on their feet and back in business. For some this was a question of restoring a strong position that had been taken from them. Others were resolved to change their businesses to avoid some of the issues that had brought them to the brink. Alex Bisset, from Northumberland, had a pedigree Bluefaced Leicester flock that had been established in the mid-1970s. He believed his farm, at Middle Dukesfield, Steel, near Hexham, was one of the last ones to go in the area in September, 2001.
