UDUPI: Officials of district child protection unit acting on a tip off prevented the marriage of a 17-year-old girl with a 28-year-old youth at Talluru Guddeyanagadi in Kundapur taluk on Thursday. All preparations were in place for the marriage at Maha Ganapathi auditorium at Trasi with more than 200 guests in attendance when officials of department of women and child welfare got wind of the same and prevented the same with DCPU officials.
With police, gram panchayat and department officials in tow, the DCPU officials visited the auditorium and put a halt to the child marriage. The officials informed both the bride and the grooms side about the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act 2006 and obtained an undertaking from the family, auditorium owners and the priests that they will refrain from violating the Act, Prabhakar Achar, legal-cum-probation officer, DCPU said.
