My Dry January Was Off to a Rough Start Could Creative, Boozeless Concoctions Serve Up Some Redemption?

My Dry January Was Off to a Rough Start. Could Creative, Boozeless Concoctions Serve Up Some Redemption? Illustration by Jon Fuller As the days shortened and darkened with 2020’s final act, I found my nightly glass of wine coming earlier and becoming two, or three, sometimes chased by shame the next morning. A disclaimer: I don’t see drinking as a black-and-white divide between good, self-controlled, responsible drinkers and bad, gluttonous alcoholics. Everyone who chooses to imbibe exists on a spectrum of risk, and where you fall depends on your relationship with alcohol. I’ve always liked to drink, although since college, my relationship with alcohol has mellowed. Pre-pandemic, I’d go out and throw a few back once a week with pals, but for the most part, I felt in control. Until I didn’t.

How Fayetteville s Person, Hay, Gillespie, Ramsey streets were named

It’s probably no surprise that Person Street in Fayetteville was named for a person. But it wasn’t just any person. It was a person named Person who served as a brigadier general in the Revolutionary War and as a member of the state legislature for 30 years. He also was a member of the committee that named streets in Fayetteville. Four prominent streets in the city Hay, Gillespie, Person and Ramsey are named for the four members of that committee, according to the Fayetteville Observer archives. The North Carolina General Assembly appointed the committee in 1783 to name the most important downtown roads as the former village of Cross Creek transitioned to Fayetteville.
