NEW DELHI: The proportion of the working-age population in India is expected to increase to 65% in 2036 from 61% in 2011 with 12 million people being added to the working age population each year, health minister Harsh Vardhan said on Saturday, citing ‘Population Projection for India and States- 2011-2036’.
The total fertility rate (TFR) is expected to decline from 2.37 during 2011-2015 to 1.73 during 2031-35 resulting in a substantial drop in the proportion of population aged under 15, which is projected to decline from 30.9% to 20% during that period.
Between 2011 and 2036, because of the lowering fertility, the youth population in the age group of 15-24 is also projected to decline from 233 million to 227 million.
