The Newark City Council on Monday night denied a proposal to build a six-story building with retail, apartments and a public parking garage at the center of the city s Main Street.
In a 4-3 vote, the council denied a parking waiver and other code relief necessary for the proposal. Critics said the project is out of scale and against the character of the college town.
An attorney for developers Todd Bariglio and Michael Scali, who built a similar complex on South Main Street years ago, said they will now pursue a by-right plan of similar scale that will likely give the council less leeway to say no.
