The PIA aircraft, that was impounded in Kuala Lumpur, returns to Islamabad on January 29 | Hassaan Ali Khan
It seemed like a routine flight for Captain Athar Haroon and his crew as PK894 descended into Kuala Lumpur. He was flying one of the 12 Boeing 777s Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) has in its fleet. But this was not just any other aircraft. This particular plane was one of the two Boeing 777s that PIA has leased from a Dublin-based aircraft lessor. And PIA was also fighting a British court case over the jet’s lease.
While the plane was taxiing to the designated gate at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA), the captain and his crew were unaware of the flurry of activity happening behind the scenes at the airport. Inside the air traffic control tower, the controllers were instructed not to clear the flight back to Islamabad, which was supposed to fly within a few hours. The aircraft had landed in Kuala Lumpur on schedule, but it was not leaving on one.

ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) - PIA’s Boeing 777 plane reached Islamabad from Kuala Lumpur with 173 passengers on board on Friday. The plane was handed over to PIA two days ago after the lease payment issue was resolved.
Upon receiving clearance, the PIA crew arrived in Malaysia the same day to bring the plane back.
To recall, Malaysian authorities seized the Boeing 777 aircraft on January 15 after a court allowed an application by the plane’s lessor, Peregrine Aviation Charlie Limited, to keep it grounded pending the outcome of a $14 million lease dispute with PIA in a UK court.

KUALA LUMPUR: A Malaysian court has ordered immediate release of a Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) plane that had been seized nearly two weeks ago by the authorities over a London court case about the jet’s lease after the applicant, Peregrine Aviation Charlie Ltd, agreed to withdraw its suit against PIA Corporation.
The Boeing 777 aircraft was seized on Jan 15 soon after landing at Kuala Lumpur International Airport on the orders of a local court that allowed an application by lessor Peregrine Aviation Charlie Limited to keep it grounded until the result of a $14 million lease dispute with PIA in Britain.
