A few hundred people attended a 75th anniversary party Tuesday at Willoughby Park in Aspen to mark the original dedication of Aspen Moutain’s Lift 1 on Jan. 11, 1947.
The Aspen Skiing Company is celebrating a 75th anniversary on Tuesday, Jan. 11. The company has pegged the anniversary to the official opening celebration of Aspen Mountain’s original lifts, Lift One and Lift Two, held on Jan. 11, 1947. Tim Willoughby remembers how his uncle and father help build the lifts, which began spinning on Dec. 14, 1946.
A significant milestones is celebrated this month in Aspen. Depending on if you are counting ski season years or calendar years, and whether you are looking at the local’s opening December ceremony or the public January one, Lift One opened 75 years ago. It was the first Aspen Skiing Company chairlift, but the first lift and skiing on Aspen Mountain is celebrating 84 years.
