With Earth Moods and Its Ilk, TV Goes From Meditative to Vegetative

When TV Goes Right Past Meditative to Vegetative “Earth Moods” may look like a screensaver, but you’ll have to pay Disney+ to enjoy its calming effects. “Earth Moods” is one of several TV series that seek to soothe rather than excite or engage.Credit.National Geographic/Disney+ April 16, 2021 “Earth Moods,” which landed on Disney+ on Friday, is a television show: five episodes, each 31 minutes long. So why does it look so much like a screensaver? There are no voices in “Earth Moods” because there are no people. Just the abstract beauty of nature — the streaks and whorls of green water and red earth, as the screen drifts from dunes to reef to river delta. (There is an urban episode, “Night Lights,” but the aerial photography elides the human occupants of cars and buildings.) The soundtrack soughs and swells in step with the slowly moving cameras, occasionally giving way to the music of wind, water and birdsong.

The Happy List: 28 pop culture pleasures worth smiling about

, but only one rivals the Jeopardy! spoofs as the all-time funniest: the 2019 skit What s That Name? featuring Bill Hader as host Vince Blight, with John Mulaney and Cecily Strong as contestants. The conceit is simple. We show you a person, says Vince, and you tell us their name. But then Vince annihilates Mulaney s unsuspecting character, Doug, who loses out on huge cash prizes because he can t remember the name of his close friend s girlfriend or his wife s bridesmaids. His self-absorption and oblivious misogyny give the setup an extra bite. What kind of horrible game show is this? asks Doug. Replies Vince: It s What s That Name?
